AUT’s creative technology centre CoLab have launched version 1.0 of their interactive music video application, New Day Interactive.

The application works as an open narrative, allowing users to create their own music video experience by rotating their iPhone, which initiates a new video sequence, picked at random.  The application currently has a series of ten sequences but has the potential, once web-based, for thousands, producer Laurent Antonczak said.

The user’s movements and resulting video can be recorded, creating a personalized music video, or users can make use of the preset video in the playlist.  The user's video can be saved to a playlist, ranked, managed and replayed.

The 1.0 version is now available free from the Apple App store and the 1.1 version, updated to better optimise the memory use for iPhone 3G, is ready and pending Apple approval, said Mr  Antonczak.  The current version is made for iPhones only, and works best with the iPhone 4 and 3GS, due to their great efficiency.  He said there was a slight lag for 3G iPhones.

The project has been in the works for about 2 years and is a collaboration between CoLab and Virtuo, an international collective of experts from various disciplines.

The application takes its name from the song playing in the current video chapters, New Day by Simon Comber, a New Zealand musician.  Mr Antonczak said having Kiwi music was an important part of sourcing the music for the app.

Mr Comber said he met Mr Antonczak at a farewell party, and they decided to work together on the project.

“We were both sober. One thing led to another.”

The next project for the New Day Interactive team, said Mr Antonczak, was to make the app available to Android phones, and to create a “normal” music video for Mr Comber.
