Supermarket company Foodstuffs South Island is planning to build a $45 million distribution centre at Hornby that will be the biggest of its kind in New Zealand.
A 13ha section was purchased by the company for the centre. A 13,000sq m building already exists adjacent and the new building will be 25,000sq m.
Its present site in Papanui purchased in 1971 and expanded three times since then is too small for the company’s needs and will be sold, but it will keep its head office there.
“Hornby is now the distribution hub of the South Island due to its proximity to State Highways north and south, the new Southern Motorway Project, plus the Port of Lyttelton,” Foodstuffs South Island chief executive Steve Anderson said.
“This new facility gives us the chance to introduce much ‘greener’ energy and lighting systems, increase rack heights to 11 metres and have improved work conditions with covered dock areas and larger yard areas.”
Building will start towards the end of this year and is expected to be completed in late 2012.
