Apple has focussed on boosting power with a refresh of its all-in-one iMac desktop range.

Following the path already trodden by PC makers in the Windows camp, the new iMacs gain support for Intel's second-generation Core i5 and Core i7 processors, popularly known by their pre-release codename "Sandy Bridge".

The new iMacs also gain support for Thunderbolt, a new connectivity technology, co-designed with Intel.

Already incorporated into Apple' latest MacBook Pro series, Thunderbolt allows for connections up to 10Gbit/sec, or 12 times faster than Firewire (providing the device you're connecting to also has a Thunderbolt port).

A 21.5-inch iMac features a single Thunderbolt I/O jack.

A 27-inch model features two Thunderbolt ports, making it the first iMac to support two external monitors.

Apple claims the new iCore processors, combined with graphics and memory controller enhancements, will make the new iMacs up to 70% faster.

Techs, specs and pricing
The 21.5-inch iMac is available in two configurations: one with a 2.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 500GB hard drive for a recommended retail price of NZ$1999 inc GST; and one with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1TB hard drive for a recommended retail price of NZ$2499 inc GST.

The new 27-inch iMac is available in two models: one with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1TB hard drive for a recommended retail price of NZ$2799 inc GST; and one with a 3.1 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6970M and 1TB hard drive for a recommended retail price of NZ$3298 inc GST.

Configure-to-order options include faster Intel Core i7 processors up to 3.4 GHz, additional hard drive capacity up to 2TB, a 256GB solid state drive, additional DDR3 memory
