Apple says it sold a record 9 million of its new iPhones during their first three days on the sale.

The iPhone 5s and the cheaper iPhone 5c were released on September 20, in the US, Australia and several other countries, but an NZ release date has yet to be announced.

Apple says the 5s has now sold out and "online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks."

The company did not say which handset was the biggest seller.

The iPhone 5 sold 5 million on its launch weekend.

The new iPhone 5c is the first iPhone to be simultaneously released in the US and China (previously, Chinese buyers have had to wait months).

The company also said 200 million iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users have now upgraded to its new iOS 7 software (in January, Apple said it had sold more than 500 million iOS devices).

Apple shares [NAS:AAPL] rose 5.17% on the news.

Despite some privacy qualms over its fingerprint scanning technology, Apple's new flagship phone, the iPhone 5s, has gained solidly positive reviews

Reviewers have praised the fingerprint sensor, which is said to be faster and more accurate than various manufacturers' previous efforts at one-swipe biometric logons. The iPhone 5s' new camera has also been a hit - particularly it's new option for slow motion video.

In addition, more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history. Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. Demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.

“This is our best iPhone launch yet―more than nine million new iPhones sold―a new record for first weekend sales,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”
