Tauranga City Council says development of a new marine precinct could begin as early as next year.
The debt-ridden council wants to boost its marine sector by developing new infrastructure on council -owned land at Sulphur Point.
Spokesman Kevin Hill says that because of the council’s debt situation it is unable to make progress on its own so is instead looking to facilitate development to built up the marine sector.
The council has released plans for the area and is calling on developers to register interest by the end of the month.
Mr Hill says the council wants “an all-out facility to service fishing boats, launches and recreational fishing”.
The council has made clear in its plans the land-based facilities it is keen on, including a new travel lift, wash-down areas for boats and vessel storage and loading facilities.
The council will be flexible as to whether there will be a long-term lease, staged sell-down or complete sale of the land.
The land is divided into three zones. The principal development area is 3.55ha and the secondary area about 1.36ha.
A third zone located over water already has resource consent to extend existing wharves and Mr Hill hopes this will start next year.
The new plans have been proposed after increased investment in Sulphur Point.
Nearby wharves are being extended to meet commercial shipping needs as part of Port of Tauranga’s $150 million worth of capital investment in the area.
