New vehicle sales reached a 20-month high in June, with more than a quarter of the sales made by Toyota which dominated the rental market business.

The 5786 new car registrations in June were up 25.4% on May and 34.4% higher than a year ago, the New Zealand Transport Agency said.

Used car registrations -- generally imported used cars -- totalled 7402 last month, slightly higher than May and 36.9% ahead of the same month a year earlier.

New commercial vehicle registrations during the month were 2198, up 24.1% from May and 23.2% higher than the same month last year.

Toyota accounted for 26.3% of the June sales, compared to 21.2% for the year so far and 21.8% for all of 2009.

Top new car model last month was Toyota's Rav4 with 421 sales, of which 332 were sold to the rental market.

Next most popular models last month were the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Landcruiser Prado, both of which had 219 sales, with 176 of the Prados sold to the rental market.

The Suzuki Swift was ranked fourth for new cars in June with 212 sales, followed by the Holden Commodore on 211, and the Ford Falcon on 205.

The Toyota Hilux maintained its dominance among new commercial models with 539 registrations last month, more than the combined totals for the next two models -- the Nissan Navara with 256 and Ford Ranger with 250.

Year-to-date new car registrations are ahead of 2009 by 17.4%, with new commercial vehicle sales up 9.6%.

Motor Industry Association chief executive Perry Kerr said new car sales had been growing for six months and the industry hoped it had turned the corner on 2009.
