In what could be the shape of broadcasting to come, a niche website has picked up broadcasting rights for the Sochi Paralympic Games.
Attitude Pictures, an indie production company that specialises in content featuring people with impairments has rights to broadcast 44 hours of free coverage from the event. It will do this on its website, AttitudeLive.
TVNZ will provide news, highlight packages and OnDemand content of the event as well.
The rights were previously held by Sky TV, which Labour MP Clare Curran criticised back in 2012 for only providing highlights to pay wall subscribers.
She said a commercial broadcaster Sky was constrained by the commercial analysis of previous paralympics viewing figures.
NZ On Air has agreed to provide up to $261,000 funding to provide a documentary special including broad coverage of the Games, and Attitude Pictures has also picked up ACC as a sponsor.
New Zealand has three winter paralympians competiting in the event which begins March 7.
Paralympics New Zealand chief executive Fiona Allan says“New Zealand’s 17-medal haul at the London 2012 Paralympic Games has stimulated even more interest in paralympic sport.
