The Norman family presides over James Pascoe Ltd, a giant retailer with hundreds of outlets across New Zealand and Australia under the Pascoes, Stewart Dawsons, Prouds, Goldmark, Angus & Coote, Stevens and Farmers brands.
The family deliberately keeps a low profile as part of a strategy that includes not taking any profits out of its companies.
However, earlier this year Farmers was unable to keep out of the headlines after workers walked off the job for a series of strikes in a bid to increase their wages and working conditions. The action affected 40 of the retail chain's 56 stores.
The group employs 11,000 people at 700 stores in New Zealand and Australia.
The Normans also hold a passive 19.68% stake in The Warehouse.
