Green Party co-leader Russel Norman has been confirmed as his party's candidate to stand in the Rongotai electorate in the general election next year.

Dr Norman also stood in the seat in the 2008 election but lost to Labour deputy leader Annette King. Ms King had 19,614 votes to Dr Norman's 5925. National minister Chris Finlayson was second with 10,594.

Dr Norman, who lives in the Wellington suburb of Hataitai, said the critical issue for the electorate was plans for a four lane highway from the Basin Reserve to the airport.

"Our focus is better buses and trains and giving Wellingtonians the chance to safely walk or bike."

He said his campaign would focus on maximising the party vote.
