The number of New Zealanders reporting they are saving is rising, a survey has found.
The latest AMP SuperWatch survey, published today, found that three out of four people questioned reported they were saving. That was up from 68 percent at the last survey in August, and from 64 percent in February 2009.
Retirement remained the main reason for saving, at 63 percent, up from 58 percent in February 2009, AMP said.
KiwiSaver was the preferred retirement savings option, with 67 percent of those saving for retirement contributing to a KiwiSaver scheme. Every second eligible person had joined KiwiSaver.
While the number of people saving for retirement had increased, fewer than one in five had written down ideas about how they would finance their retirement or formed their ideas into a plan.
The survey was carried out by Colmar Brunton in February and had a sample size of 501, AMP said.
For the first time it asked people about their spending behaviour, with two out of three saying that because of the recession they were spending more carefully.
