The stock market started the year mostly livelier than it was 12 months ago, although the total value traded was still lower than in January 2009.
Figures released by sharemarket operator NZX today show total trades in January were up 14 percent on a year earlier to 36,139, with average daily trades up 20 percent.
While the total value traded last month was 3 percent lower than in January 2009 at $1.45 billion, the daily average value traded was up 2 percent to $76m.
Nearly $16m of new equity was raised during the month, with $8.9m of new debt.
The benchmark NZX-50 index ended January on 3165 points, up 14 percent on a year earlier but down 2 percent for the month.
The number of real time data terminals was 27 percent lower than a year earlier, and 1 percent down from December, at 7181.
