The MV Southern Lily -- a cargo ship operating between New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa and American Samoa -- will be replaced by a larger vessel of the same name on January 27.

The new 13,000 tonne ship is 60 percent bigger than her 2007-built predecessor with a service speed of 17 knots, Lloyd's List reported on its daily commercial news website.

The replacement of the Singapore-flagged vessel will enable the Pacific Direct Line, Reef Shipping and Sofrana Unilines shipping companies to expand the capacity of its service carrying containers and hold cargo on the route between New Zealand (Auckland and Lyttelton), Tonga, and Samoa (Apia and Pago Pago).

Owned by Pacific Direct Line, which is a subsidiary of Singapore-based PDL International PTE Ltd, the present Southern Lily will complete voyage 238 in Pago Pago then sail to Singapore, while the big new Southern Lily will load in Auckland on January 27, for stops at Tonga on February 1, Samoa on February 3 and American Samoa on February 4.
