The kiwi rallied against the greenback overnight, gaining nearly a cent as investors regained their risk appetite amid an apparently stabilising situation in Greece and general market optimism.

"The absence of more bad news on Greece, combined with some upbeat global data, saw risk appetite improve and equity markets post solid gains overnight," BNZ markets strategist Mike Jones said.

New Zealand's dollar was trading for US70.61c at 9am today, from US69.90c at 5pm yesterday -- in keeping with the greenback's weakening against most of the major world currencies.

The NZD opened the session up against the yen, gaining from 62.86 yesterday to 63.63 this morning. The kiwi fell marginally against the aussie, to A78.38c at 9am today, from A78.44c yesterday afternoon.

Against the euro, the kiwi gained slightly to 0.5133, from yesterday's 0.5130.

The trade-weighted index continued edging upwards, to 65.04, from 64.76 at 5pm yesterday and 64.71 the day before.

Statistics New Zealand yesterday announced PPI outputs index fell 0.4 percent and PPI inputs index rose 0.3 percent for the December quarter.
