New Zealand has joined 18 other nations in calling for recommitment to the next round of Doha negotiations.
Trade Minister Tim Groser made the call for New Zealand. He was at the Cairns Group meeting in Uruguay.
The 19 agriculture exporting countries that comprise the Cairns Group urged all World Trade Organisation (WTO) members to continue engaging at the ministerial level to bring a successful conclusion to Doha negotiations.
Doha negotiations aim to lower international trade barriers.
Mr Groser said New Zealand had made "great progress" advancing its trade agenda through free trade agreements but "the reality is there is no substitute for the WTO".
"The basic political message from Cairns Group Ministers is there is unfinished business here of global importance."
Mr Groser will meet Uruguay President Jose Mujica and several ministers tomorrow.
