New Zealand Post has been removing hundreds of street post boxes from remote areas to adjust to changing customer behaviour.
Since 2005 the total number of street mailing boxes has declined from approximately 4500 to 4000, down 12%. Over the same five-year period overall mail volumes have fallen by approximately 160 million items, or 16%.
In the past three years, 52 boxes were removed from Auckland and 74 from Wellington.
New Zealand Post told NBR low use in remote areas is the main reason for post boxes removal around the country.
The use of single-aperture post boxes in more remote suburban areas is continuously declining, while boxes in more heavily frequented places, such as outside busy supermarkets and shopping centres, are more and more used.
The company said there is no pre-determined number of boxes to be removed.
