United States President Barack Obama announced that the Al Qaeda leader was killed on Sunday in a firefight with United States forces in Pakistan.
In response to the news, other world leaders warned against complacency, saying there was a threat of retaliatory actions.
Prime Minister John Key said he had spoken to national security officials this morning, to ensure all the necessary precautionary steps were taken.
"Both the United States and Britain have indicated that this is an environment where there might be a heightened sense of risk, and clearly, from New Zealand's perspective, I want to make sure that we are taking those risks seriously and New Zealanders are at no greater risk than they should be," Mr Key said.
"This is potentially a more heightened environment, we appreciate that. It's just a matter of making sure that we're ticking all the boxes where we should be."
