Around 10.15am the NZX-50 was down 1.07 points to 3325.64, having yesterday ended up 1.7 points.
Freightways lost 3c early to 312, while NZ Refining Corp added 3c to 433, Restaurant Brands lifted 2c to 264 and infrastructure investor Infratil gained 2c to 196.
Contact Energy gained 2c to 620, Fletcher Building was up 1c to 771, and Telecom was unchanged on 221.
In the United States, stocks slipped as soft retail sales and a sharp rise in the greenback left investors edgy a day ahead of December's employment report.
The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 0.2 percent to 11,697.31, according to preliminary data, while the Standard&Poor's 500 Index was off 0.2 percent to 1273.85, and the Nasdaq Composite Index added 0.3 percent to 2709.89.
