A new deal signed with Mexico hopes to encourage Kiwi clean energy companies to expand sales there.
Energy and Resources Minister Gerry Brownlee signed the cooperation arrangement with Mexico’s Secretary of Energy Georgina Kessels.
The arrangement, in new and renewable energy, formalises cooperative institutional links to encourage renewable energy development, along with promoting good bilateral relations, according to a statement released today.
“The types of initiatives that may be pursued under the arrangement include closer cooperation between New Zealand and Mexican research organisations and businesses and educational exchanges between energy and climate change researchers between our countries,” Mr Brownlee said.
“The focus will be on improving renewable energy knowledge and expertise, so that both our countries can benefit and encourage renewable energy development.”
The non-binding memorandum of understanding was negotiated between the Ministry of Energy in Mexico and New Zealand’s Ministry of Economic Development, along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Mr Brownlee is in Cancun, Mexico, attending the International Energy Forum – the world’s largest gathering of Energy Ministers. Countries in attendance account for more than 90% of global oil and gas supply and demand.
