Shares in gold miner Oceana Gold have been placed in a trading halt pending a material announcement.

The company, which is listed in New Zealand, Australia and Canada, has seen its stock surge to over $3 on the NZX after touching a record low of 22c in February last year.

OceanaGold, which operates mines in Otago and the West Coast, recently reported fourth quarter gold sales of 72,140oz, lifting its total for the 2009 financial year 14% from 2008 to a record 300,044oz.

In early January the company announced an increase in reserves of 754,000oz of gold at Macraes and 122,000oz at Reefton.

Oceana also owns the Didipio Gold-Copper Project in northern Luzon, Philippines.
