Labour MP Damien O'Connor is taking over the agriculture portfolio in the shadow cabinet, party leader Phil Goff said today.
Until now it has been held by Jim Anderton, leader of the Progressive Party, who was Minister of Agriculture in the previous Labour cabinet.
"Jim has been a great advocate for the agriculture sector, but as he has decided not to seek re-election as an MP he has decided to relinquish the role to someone who will be standing in 2011," Mr Goff said.
Mr Anderton is contesting the Christchurch mayoralty in the October local body elections.
Mr O'Connor is already Labour's rural affairs and biosecurity spokesman.
Mr Goff said Mr O'Connor had huge experience as a former share-milker, farmer and now berry-fruit grower.
"I know Damien is looking forward to his new role," Mr Goff said.
"Labour will continue to support and work closely with Jim Anderton and we wish him well for his Christchurch mayoral campaign."
Mr O'Connor is a list MP and is standing for the West Coast-Tasman seat in the next election. He lost it to National in 2008.
