One million Rugby World Cup 2011 tickets have been sold, and ticket revenue has reached $NZ220 million.
The tip over into seven digits came after a surge in sales during the final phase of ticketing which opened to public on Monday. The sales in this final phase increased ticket revenue by $17 million.
Fans purchased 211,000 tickets in the past six weeks, at a value of $NZ51 million. This brought the RWC sales revenue up to 82% of its final target of $NZ268.5 million, based on Rugby New Zealand 2011's forecast for expected ticket sales of 1.35 million from 48 Tournament matches.
RNZ 2011's chief executive Martin Snedden said the organisation was thrilled with the way fans in New Zealand and around the world had responded to the final ticketing phase.
"This is a fantastic result and is about where we expected to be with little over two months until the Tournament kicks-off."
RNZ 2011 said the highest grossing event before the cup was the 2005 British and Irish Lions Tour, which grossed $24 million. Mr Snedden said the RWC 2011 had now achieved nine times the ticket revenue for that event. He said 85,000 fans from more than 100 countries will be attending.
"We expect tickets to continue to sells trongly from here as happened at Rugby World Cup in France in 2007 and Australia in 2003."
