Will and Kate's April 29 wedding will be very web 2.0 - starting with live streaming. Here are one's various options for watching the event live online:
In a marital monarchy first, the royal wedding is to stream live online via YouTube - one of a host of online interaction options.
The just-updated royal wedding website (which you were reading why? ED) now provides a host of options for web users to not only watch, but interact with an event expected to draw more than 1 billion viewers globally. Charles and Diana’s wedding in 1981 attracted 28.4 million British viewers. An estimated 700 million watched the FIFA football world cup final in July last year.
One’s options
On YouTube – The Royal Channel – to stream the wedding live from 10am UK time, with Clarence House and St. James’ Palace staff providing a live commentary with “historical information, interesting links, additional photographs and video footage as well as an integrated Twitter feed”.
As part of a YouTube “Wedding Book”, YouTube users are also invited to submit videos congratulating the couple.
On Flickr – the British monarchy account – to release royal wedding-related photos in the weeks following the wedding
On Twitter – the official Clarence House Twitter account – to provide live updates on the day of the wedding,
Twitter users can send the royal couple their congratulations using the hashtag #rw2011.
On Facebook - The British monarchy page – to be updated hourly on the day.
The British monarchy page has also created a Royal Wedding event page, where Facebook users can click “I’m attending” and, according to the official royal wedding website “become part of a community of Facebook users celebrating the wedding across the world”.
A Stories app, due to be launched a week before the April 29 wedding, will give users an opportunity to share how they are preparing for and/or celebrating the wedding.
The official royal wedding website will also publish detailed announcements on the day.
With such a high level of global interest, one cannot help but wonder just how many of these messages will be seen by the royal couple…
