The Auckland Regional Transport Authority has arranged that when travelers catch the train to Newmarket, they’ll be rewarded for the initiative with free wine.

In a marketing stint aimed at encouraging people to travel to the new Newmarket train station, local businesses are offering discounts and bonuses to shoppers who present their train ticket.

Sugar Bar will be doling out free glasses of house wine to people who buy a platter, the Mustang Saloon is giving out free pizza to those who buy two glasses of wine while Sierra Café is offering free muffins.

Other benefits for folks who ride the train to the inner Auckland shopping hub include quadruple Flybuys points at United Travel, a free body fat assessment for the girls at or a bar of soap from Farmers.

There are even two for one drink deals at Osbourne St Bar & Kitchen, and more boozy bonuses to be found at Nuffield Street Trading Brewbar.

Private Bin wonders what kind of treats travelers would get if a new train station were to open at, say, the Papakura or Manurewa stops.
