The 141,300 overseas visitors arriving in May was about 600 lower than the number a year earlier, as visitor numbers from Australia fell, despite having risen for the year as a whole.
Statistics New Zealand figures published today showed 64,300 overseas visitors came from Australia last month, down 3146 or 4.7 percent from May 2009.
For the year to May, the number of overseas visitors coming from Australia was up 11.2 percent to 1.11 million.
In contrast, the number of visitors from China was up last month from a year earlier, despite being down for the 12 months.
The 7740 Chinese visitors in May were 2124 or 37.8 percent higher than a year earlier, but down 7.1 percent for the year to May to 102,246.
Visitors from Britain dropped 14.7 percent to 9040 for the month, and were down 5.1 percent for the year to about 250,000.
The total number of overseas visitors for the year to May was up 72,000 or 3 percent to 2.49m.
New Zealand residents left on 165,400 short-term overseas trips in May, up 1700 or 1 percent from May 2009. For the year the number was 1.95m, up 1 percent from a year earlier.
