The Waitangi Tribunal has released part two of Te Urewera, a pre-publication report relating to the Wai 894 group of Treaty of Waitangi claims, which includes at times damning accounts of the Crown's historic treatment of Maori in the Urewera region.

The seven chapter report follows a five chapter pre-publication report released in April last year.

The chapters assess alleged historical grievances, with the resulting reports being sent to claimants and the Crown.

The tribunal has not included recommendations in the latest report.

A spokesman for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson said the minister was already knowledgeable about the history of the Crown's actions in the Ureweras through the work of Judith Binney and other historians.

He said settlement with claimant groups in that area was important to the Crown's goal of settling historical claims in a "just and durable fashion".

"He is currently involved in a process with Tuhoe towards the goal of a settlement of its historical claims. It is not appropriate to discuss details of those negotiations through the media," the spokesman said.
