A petition has been started to urge the Government to remove GST from food and make the tax system fairer.
Tax Justice campaigner Vaughan Gunson said his group's No GST on Food Facebook page had 3000 supporters.
"We thought we'd get more support as the GST rise approached. Over the last few months we've been picking up a lot anger towards National's GST hike (15 percent from tomorrow), which will mean people paying more for food, clothing, petrol, electricity and other basics," he said in a statement.
"I think many politicians fail to appreciate how tight the weekly budgets of many New Zealanders are."
The Government says most New Zealanders will be better off overall as tax cuts also come in tomorrow.
The group aims to get 10,000 signatures over two days.
Recently Maori Party MP Rahui Katene's bill to remove GST from healthy food failed to pass its first reading. The Labour Party says it would take GST off fresh fruit and vegetables.
