BUSINESSDESK: Petrobas, the Brazilian oil company, has survived a challenge from local iwi and Greenpeace to its east coast exploration permit.

Greenpeace and te Whanau a Apanui are reviewing their options after Justice Warwick Gendall rejected their application that the minister of energy erred in law in awarding the permit.

The challenge relates to the minister’s awarding of oil exploration permits in the Raukumara Basin.

The exploration is over deep water and poses environmental threats, the applicants had argued.

Greenpeace is mulling whether to appeal the decision.

“Exploratory deep sea oil drilling comes with the risk of catastrophic failure, as we saw in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010,” Greenpeace said.
