Pike River Coal Ltd chief executive Gordon Ward is leaving the company on October 1.

He has been chief executive since May 2007. The company said it would name a successor shortly.

The board thanked Mr Ward for his significant contribution to the company over what has been an extended and often difficult period of mine development.

Pike River operates a coal mine on the West Coast of the South Island.
