Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa says it has won a contract from Pioneer Generation to supply turbines with a total installed capacity of 7.65 megawatts for Otago's Mount Stuart wind farm.
The company will supply nine G52-850kW wind turbines for the $17 million power project, which is expected to generate enough electricity to meet the annual energy needs of about 3350 homes.
Construction of the wind farm, sited 15km east of Milton in Otago, is scheduled to begin in April so that it can start generation later this year.
Pioneer Generation chief executive Fraser Jonker said resource consent was given for the farm in the middle of last year, pending certain conditions being signed off by the council.
Gamesa said that the new contract was its first in the Asia-Pacific wind power market and the company planned to establish a subsidiary in this region this year to offer project services as well as wind turbine operation and maintenance services.
