Fruit breeding company Prevar has signed a marketing licence with the Freshmax Group to grow a new pear range in Australia.
The new block red fruit called PiqaBoo combines characteristics from European, Japanese and Chinese pears, Prevar chief executive Brett Ennis says.
Prevar already has an agreement with World Wide Fruit UK for the full Piqa range to be marketed and sold there.
Dr Ennis displayed the range at the recent Asia Fruit Congress held immediately before the Asia Fruit Logistica exhibition in Hong Kong, where he said it was enthusiastically received.
“It is so rewarding to see that industry leaders recognized that these new fruits really bring something new and exciting to the category,” he says.
Freshmax chief executive Ross Kane says, “We believe there are excellent commercial opportunities for these new fruits in Australia and in Asian export markets.
“The pear fruit category is in need of rejuvenation and these new Piqa brand fruit selections will be a significant catalyst for this. The PiqaBoo brand cultivar is visually striking in both colour and shape and has a very appealing crisp texture and flavour, resulting in a very broad appeal to consumers.”
