Plans have been revealed for a new $100 million hotel development near Taupo.
The proposed development, a circular design with a green space in the middle, may sit on a six-hectare site next to the Huka Village, 2km north of Taupo on State Highway 1.
It includes a 250-bed four-star hotel, 102 apartments and a conference centre with a capacity for 600 people.
A group of 10 unidentified Kiwi and foreign investors are part of a consortium called NLT Development, which has lodged a resource consent application for the project with Taupo District Council, the Dominion Post reported.
A source close to the project said Novotel or Grand Mercure may run the complex.
An economic assessment report estimated the development would add $18m a year to the local economy. About 500 jobs would be created during the 18-month construction, and about 420 jobs when the hotel was up and running.
The report estimates the hotel will generate $20m annually.
Taupo already has several four- and five-star hotels.
