The Government has announced 78 appointees to 20 polytech councils.

The councils were reduced in size by a law change last year -- from between 12 and 20 members down to eight, with four appointed by the tertiary education minister.

At the time of the change Labour and the Greens said it gave the Government too much power.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce announced the ministerial appointments today.

Of the 78 appointments, 33 were existing council members and 45 new ones.

Two further appointments are yet to be made.

A number of cross-appointments were made on geographically-related councils, Mr Joyce said.

In the Wellington area three ministerial appointees sit on the boards of Whitireia Polytech and Weltec.

"The Government is keen to encourage polytechs to work together in a complementary way and the cross-appointments we have made will encourage that," Mr Joyce said.

"These appointments will help strengthen the performance of the polytechnics which play such a vital role in our educational and economic future."
