If Arnie can pack some fuel cells into his Hummer, there’s no reason Porsche’s SUV can’t be environmentally friendly too.

Greenies may still find the idea of an ecological sports utility vehicle hard to swallow, but a hybrid version of the Porsche Cayenne (pictured) is currently being previewed on the continent.

Its 34kW electric motor will see drivers through to speed of up to 156km per hour, according to Porsche. To go faster, you'll have to flip the switch to a more conventional petrol engine.

Giltrap Prestige’s Greg Clarke told NBR he expects local release in July.

Mr Clarke said he is already fielding a lot of queries.

Since the first-generation Cayenne’s 2003 release, 672 of the SUVs have been sold in New Zealand.

Pricing for the hybrid has yet to be announced, but it is expected to be somewhere north of the current Cayenne range, which starts at $135,000 (for entry-level petrol and diesel versions) and runs through to $300,000 for a twin turbo V8.
