Qik, the mobile video company bought by Skype recently, has launched its new Android version, called Qik Video Connect, and an update to the latest Qik iPhone app.
The new version for Android means users can video chat with other Androids and iPhones, and is the first time video chat capability has been available on the Android market for download, and not just as a pre-loaded app.
The version was announced in a press statement, which also said that Qik Video Connect was the only mobile video calling solution to offer video mail. The app does not require a front-facing camera.
The apps work on Android 2.1 - 2.3.3 and on iPhones, iPad2 and any iPod Touch with a camera. The press release said Qik offers longer battery life, smoother video and better picture quality due to "hardware integration in collaboration with handset manufacturers", including Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola and Dell, and chip set vendors including Qualcomm, TI, Samsung and Nvidia.
