New Zealand came to a standstill at 12.51pm today to honour the victims of last Tuesday's earthquake, now thought to number around 240.
Prime Minister John Key and his wife Bronagh observed the period of silence in Christchurch, where they were joined by mayor Bob Parker. Rescue workers paused to mark the one-week anniversary of the disaster.
