Queenstown residents now have the opportunity to make submissions on a proposed $45 million convention centre.

Queenstown Lakes District Council has made available various documents on its website that extol the economic benefits.

The cost of funding is not explored in the reports.

The preferred parties for the project include HRL Morrison’s PIP Investment Fund for funding, Ngai Tahu Property as developer and Sky City as operator.

The council will undertake district-wide consultation from next week, with a summary of the proposal delivered to every household, placed in the Wanaka Sun and Mirror, and a direct mail out to every out-of-town ratepayer.

A separate phone survey will also be undertaken during August.

A BERL economic activity report highlights the amount of money it is estimated that the converntion centre will stimulate.

Over the two years of construction, BERL estimates that $45.3 million will be spent in the Queenstown economy.

For the first five years of operation, it is estimated that $38.8 million will be spent annually.

During construction, the convention centre will result in the employment of 267 jobs for one year, generating $23 million in regional GDP.

On average for each of the first five years, the convention centre will result in the employment of 466 jobs and generate $30.9 million in regional GDP, according to BERL.

The convention centre would have capacity for 800 people.

The preferred location for the convention centre is a Lakeview site.
