UPDATED Wednesday: Retailers are angry that national grid operator Transpower has ruled out compensation following yesterday's widespread power outages.
A fault in Huntly meant up to 200,000 customers throughout the North Island lost power yesterday afternoon, some for many hours forcing them to close businesses during the busy Christmas-lead up.
Transpower has said it will not offer compensation - a decision which has angered the Retailers' Association.
Vector has restored power to most users following a major outage which affected its northern and Auckland electricity networks earlier this afternoon.
Transpower said the power system connection to the Huntly power station was lost at 12.30pm. As a result, up to 500 MW of power supply was shed in the North Island to protect the transmission system.
It said reserve generation has been brought online to replace Huntly, that some customers have had supply restored, and that Transpower is working with distribution companies around the North Island to enable them to restore power to remaining customers.
Power has been supplied to most Auckland customers except for water heating.
The cause is unknown at this stage and further updates are expected.
