Mt Hutt in Canterbury opens this weekend to a full covering of snow.
Queenstown Rich Lister and owner of nzski.co, John Davies, was rubbing his hands this week.
The company owns three ski areas – Mt Hutt, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables.
Mt Hutt this weekend will enjoy one of its earliest openings after being hammered with nearly 70cm of snow. The skifield had a late start in 2011.
A PR person who wished to remain unnamed said Canterbury skiers would be wetting their pants this weekend.
The weather pattern was less common, coming into South Canterbury from the south east, a direction that favours snow dumps on Mt Hutt.
Further south at Queenstown, nzski.com had the snow making machines operating to allow for the opening of Coronet Peak.
Ohau is also due to open this weekend and Roundhill on June 23.
None of the North Island fields are operating yet.
