NBR Rich Lister Philip Carter’s ambitious $140 million retail development in central Christchurch will be built all at once for opening in October 2016.
The Crossing development covering 14,000sq m in the block between Cashel Mall, Colombo, Lichfield and High Sts comprises several buildings.
But Colliers leasing agent Nick Doig says it won’t be staged as tenants come on board.
Rather, key tenants are being sought along with in-fill retailers for smaller spaces for the opening date.
He says there has already been a lot of work seeking new tenants, including trips to Australia, and he hopes to announce some of the main ones soon.
The completion of the project should dovetail with other nearby office projects for state sector tenants who will provide pedestrian traffic.
If all goes to plan, there may be 15,000 people working in the central city in a couple of years, approaching the pre-2011 level.
But the nature of The Crossing is a destination mall that would compete with suburban malls such as Westfield in Riccarton on a slightly smaller scale. It will provide 650 basement car parks.
