Rugby Sevens coach knighted

The 2013 Queen Birthday Honours List includes prominent figures in the worlds of rugby, literature and the arts.

Highly successful Rugby Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens says his knighthood won’t be stopping his record-breaking run with the team since 1994. His Sevens team has won 11 world series, a World Cup in 2001 and four Commonwealth Games gold medals.

Samoa-born Professor Albert Wendt has become a Member of the exclusive Order of New Zealand and is best known for his novels, of which, Sons for the Return Home and Flying Fox in a Freedom tree, have been made into films.

Auckland art critic and historian Hamish Keith is a Companion of the NZ Order of Merit, as is Peter Biggs, managing director of Clemenger BBDO advertising in Melbourne and former chairman of Creative New Zealand.

Wellington dance teacher and choeographer Dierdre Tarrant is a new Officer of the NZOM while new Members of the NZOM for their work in the arts include NBR cartoonist and scientist Bob Brockie, Auckland singer Helen Medlyn, Wellington businessman Neil Plimmer and Nelson publisher and photographer Craig Potton.
