Ticket revenue for Rugby World Cup 2011 has exceeded 11 times the revenue of the country’s previous largest grossing event but has still to meet target.
Tournament organiser Rugby New Zealand 2011 (RNZ 2011) announced today that the revenue from Rugby World Cup tickets sold this year had reached $265.6 million from over 1.35 million ticket sales.
New Zealand’s previous record was held during the 2005 British and Irish Lions Tour, which grossed a total of $24 million.
Rugby New Zealand 2011 CEO Martin Snedden says that there are still further sales to make in order to reach the financial target set for the RWC 2011.
“We now need to make sales of just $2.9 million to meet our financial target of $268.5 million and we fully expect to do so with big crowds expected for the final four matches of the Tournament.
“The way New Zealanders have embraced this event has been fantastic and we are thrilled to be in this position given the challenges we have faced.”
France is set to playagainst Wales this weekend in the first semi-final at Eden Park on Saturday night with the All Blacks taking on Australia in the following semi-final on Sunday night.
RNZ 2011 has confirmed for the first semi-final that there will be 7,000 tickets for sale across most categories. Although allocation for the second semi-final is currently exhausted, a few hundred additional tickets are expected for release later in the week.
