BUSINESSDESK: Trans-Tasman Resources, the privately-owned ironsands explorer, has appointed former prime minister Jenny Shipley and ex-Tata Steel executive Kirby Adams to its board.

Shareholders elected the two directors at its annual meeting yesterday, Trans-Tasman Resources said in a statement.

At the same time, founding partner David Grant retired from the board, though he kept a major shareholding.

"Dame Jenny's established political credentials and Kirby Adams' extensive experience at the top of the international steel industry will bring substantial value and profile to our board," chairman Bill Bisset said.

Dame Jenny was prime minister from 1997-99, and is chair of Genesis Energy, Mainzeal Construction, Momentum Consulting, Senior Money International and the Financial Services Council.

She also sits on the board of the China Construction Bank.

Mr Adams was managing director of Tata Steel Europe, one of the 10 biggest global steel companies, and has been chief executive of BHP Steel and Bluescope Steel.

Trans-Tasman Resources was set up in 2007 to explore, assess and develop the potential of offshore iron ore deposits on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island.
