Singapore Airlines is adding two extra flights a week to Christchurch over the peak Christmas holiday period as tourism in Canterbury picks up.
The airline, which has a monopoly on the route, says it will operate an additional 10 flights from December 9 to January 16, 2014, using recently retrofitted Boeing 777-200 aircraft.
This will boost capacity of the daily service by 2710 seats (up 29%), as well as provide about 180 tonnes of additional cargo space.
“Singapore Airlines has been serving Christchurch and the South Island for nearly 30 years,” says Edwin Chiang, Singapore Airline’s general manager New Zealand.
Singapore Airlines started flying between Christchurch and Singapore on December 7, 1986, and was the first international carrier to offer services out of Christchurch.
The boost follows other recent flight increases in Christchurch during the holidays, including a new Air New Zealand service from Christchurch to Perth over four months, starting on December 9.
