Although shying away from public view, Andrew Smith continues to keep busy with philanthropic commitments and a full investment portfolio.
The Auckland businessman spent 19 years with family business Smith & Smith before heading over to Metropolitan Glass for another 20-year stint. It proved lucrative, with Metropolitan rising to become New Zealand’s largest glass merchant business; Smith ended up with a tidy $116 million when it sold in 2006. Since then he’s maintained interests in a range of companies across different fields, including aviation, horticultural equipment and property investment. He owns the 28ha Eckfords Vineyard in Marlborough, reportedly valued at near $4 million.
Smith is on the board of Outward Bound New Zealand, an organisation he’s had a long and deep involvement with. He reportedly donated $1.5 million toward Project Refresh Anakiwa, an ongoing update of Outward Bound’s picturesque Anakiwa base in the Marlborough Sounds.
Along with his Outward Bound commitments he also chairs the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation, and is a trustee of the Elizabeth Knox Home and Hospital, the Mackelvie Trust Board and the Museum Circle.
He lives with his wife Jennifer on a $10.5 million property in Remuera. He has three daughters.
