After spending 19 years with his family-owned glass business, Smith & Smith, and another 20 years at Metropolitan Glass, Andrew Smith pocketed $116 million for his one-third share when it was sold to private interests in 2006.
In addition to managing a substantial investment portfolio, Smith also owns the 28ha Eckfords Vineyard in Marlborough, which has been valued at near $4m.
He now devotes much of his time to worthy causes such as Outward Bound, where he personally donated $1.5m to the Project Refresh Anakawa project. He is chairman of the trust and is vice-president of Outward Bound International.
He is a trustee of Elizabeth Knox Home and Hospital, the Museum Circle in Auckland, the Auckland Art Gallery Foundation and the Mackelvie Trust Board.
He lives with wife Jennifer in a $10.5m property in Auckland's Remuera and counts among his interests travel, golf and the visual arts.
