Coal miner Solid Energy today publicly expressed sorrow at the tragic events at the Pike River Coal mine.

The state-owned enterprise operates the Spring Creek underground mine north of Greymouth on the West Coast and has contributed staff and equipment to help the rescue effort after an explosion at Pike River on Friday.

Police said 29 trapped miners could not have survived a second blast at the mine today.

"Our staff at Solid Energy have asked me to convey their deepest sympathy and support for the families of the 29 Pike River miners and for all our colleagues and communities on the West Coast," Solid Energy chief executive Don Elder said.
