South American film festival provides insights into complex cultures
This year the Latin American Film Festival will be held in several art centres and academic institutions throughout New Zealand between August and November.

This year the Latin American Film Festival will be held in several art centres and academic institutions throughout New Zealand between August and November.
The festival will present a selection of ten contemporary films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela which will be available free of charge.
The festival includes a wide range of genres, topics and styles, providing an opportunity for audiences to experience the cultural and social aspects of each of the participating countries.
The festival includes the Brazilian film Colegas (Buddies) a road movie which follows three young Down Syndrome adults who work in the library at the home where they live. They decide to go on a road trip partly inspired by the film Thelma and Louise.
They attempt to live out their dreams; one to see the sea, another to find a husband and the other to fly in a plane.
The Chilean film is Mi Mejor Enemigo (My Best Enemy) and is set during the war between Chile and Argentina in 1978, over a border dispute in Patagonia.
The Chilean patrol of five soldiers gets lost and encounters a group of Argentinean soldiers who they befriend, helping each other in the bleak environment and play football together.
While the war is averted one of the Argentineans is killed but the soldiers learn about their commonality both as soldiers and men. .
In Wellington, the festival will be hosted, with the support of the Wellington City Council and Te Papa, at Soundings Theatre, from 22 to 31 August. It will also travel to Upper Hutt, at Expressions Arts & Entertainment Centre, from 5 to 8 September.
In Auckland there will be screenings at AUT (September 25 – 27) and Auckland University (August 22 – September 1)
