Security Intelligence Service (SIS) director Dr Warren Tucker has been reappointed for two years, Prime Minister John Key announced today.

Dr Tucker's reappointment would provide leadership continuity for the SIS, Mr Key said.

"Dr Tucker is a career intelligence officer, and his professionalism is highly respected and regarded by the intelligence and security communities both at home and abroad," Mr Key said.

"I am delighted Dr Tucker has agreed to remain in office for a further term. He has redesigned the structure of the SIS to improve the ways in which it conducts its business, and has continued to improve its protective security function."

Dr Tucker's reappointment takes effect from November 1.

He joined the joined the Government Communications Security Bureau in 1982 after leaving the army with the rank of major and went on to head the bureau in 1999.

Dr Tucker became SIS director in 2006 and since then he has attempted to make some of its operations more open to public scrutiny, in particular releasing previously secret files.
