An investigation into the acceptance of gifts and hospitality by public servants has resulted in a state sector clampdown on freebies.

State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie said today in a statement that while most agencies "demonstrate a very clear and proper focus on limiting the acceptance of gift and hospitality" there were some - including Treasury - who have tightened their policies as a result of his investigation.

"I did have concerns about these practices and I am pleased to see that, following a review by an independent auditor, the Secretary to the Treasury has strengthened the Treasury's gifts and hospitality policy to provide clearer guidance and support for staff," Mr Rennie said.

Treasury had come under attack from the Green Party over the acceptance by staff of hospitality - including tickets to sporting events and concerts - from banks.

Mr Rennie said other state agencies also needed to improve: "I do have concerns about a number of instance were some agencies do not appear to have followed what I regard as appropriate practices, particularly around the acceptance of event-based hospitality unrelated to their core business."
