Statistics NZ has just released its latest internet service provider survey, covering June 2009 to June 2010.

It's key findings:

  • The number of broadband subscribers increased 15 percent, to 1.3 million, between June 2009 and June 2010.
  • Cellular, cable, and satellite, combined, grew at a faster rate than other broadband connection types [The largest satellite provider, Vodafone partner Farmside, recently told NBR it had 11,000 customers.]
  • 60% of broadband subscribers in June 2010 had a data cap of 5GB or more, up from 50% in June 2009.
  • Subscribers with upload speeds of 256kbps or more have increasee significantly since 2007, and now account for nearly 80% of broadband subscribers.
  • More than one-quarter of ISPs offered a free web filtering service in June 2010.

Sluggish IP 6 uptake
Every computer system and device connected to the Internet is assigned an Internet Protocol (IP) address, which is similar to having a telephone number.

The current process of distributing IP addresses is called IP Version 4. IPv4 is gradually being replaced by IPv6, a newer version of IP that greatly expands the available address space.

At June 2010, 17% of ISPs already had IPv6 available to subscribers and 33% had
plans to make it available within one year. However, 22% had no plans to make IPV6 available to subscribers.
